It is very likely that Kukulkan or Quetzlcoatl was one of the Knights Templars.  Until the Templars persecution at the hands of King Philip IV in 1307, the Templars had a fully matured sailing fleet.  We know that the Templars had beards and that the Maya did not.  The Nahua people have it that Quetzlcoatl sailed to the New World from the east on a boat made of snakes.  He supposedly taught the people how to write, agriculture and taught them language.  He also forbid them to perform human sacrifice.  Another consideration is that before the Maya conquest by Cortez, Columbus sailed to the New World and was known to have sailed to Central America in the early 1500's on his fourth voyage.  If you would like to see the video that led to this image above, click here.
A chart of the voyages of Columbus depicting his fourth voyage that resulted in his arrival in Central America.  Despite all this, Columbus arrived in Central America a little late in the timeline (early 1500's) just a few years before the arrival of Hernando Cortez in 1519.  The Temple of Kukulkan was built over in the 11th and 13th centuries on top of existing structures.  The 1200's time frame was perfect for the Knights Templars because they had reached the peak of their prominence during this time.
